A Uri Party committee on Dokdo recommended Wednesday the government should consider the islets the marker to determine where the nation¡¯s exclusive economic zone in the East Sea runs when it enters fresh negotiations with Japan. A country¡¯s EEZ runs 200 nautical miles out to sea, but Korea¡¯s and Japan¡¯s overlap in the East Sea, with Japan laying claim to waters near Dokdo.

¡°The government¡¯s designation of Ulleung Island as the marker for the EEZ led to the international misunderstanding of an illegal occupation,¡± committee spokesman Roh Ung-rae said. ¡°We have to make it our principle that Dokdo is our territory.¡±
