Defense Minister Yoon Kwang-ung on Monday warned those involved in renewed violent protests at the site for a new U.S. Forces Korea headquarters will be punished under military law for what he called a "premeditated frontal challenge to authority."

In an unscheduled press conference at the Defense Ministry, Yoon condemned Friday¡¯s protests, which saw students and activists damage newly erected barbed-wire fences and attack soldiers.

Maj. Gen. Park Gyeong-seo, who is in charge of the relocation of USFK bases, said if protestors attack and injure soldiers, it is ¡°absolutely justified" to apply military law. "However, the application will not be retroactive to cover the protests on May 5," he added.

Yoon said the ministry will issue face and body armor as well as batons and shields to protect the eyes and bodies of soldiers ¡°so they are prepared for any situation."
