Vice Foreign Minister Yu Myung-hwan on Thursday said the government will resume negotiations with Japan over the demarcation of their exclusive economic zones (EEZ) in the East Sea in late May or early June. Asked on a radio program how he will counter Japanese objections to the registrations of Korean names for seabed areas near Dokdo, the vice minister said this was Korea¡¯s non-negotiable right. He added there was no change to Korea¡¯s plan to register its own names for seabed areas there that now have only Japanese names.

But he said it was necessary to discuss the timing with a sub-committee at the International Hydrographic Organization in charge of standardizing names of sea areas, and to prevent Japan from registering its own names. Korea and Japan have tried to negotiate the EEZ demarcation since 1998, but persistent Japanese claims to sovereignty over Dokdo delayed the matter.
