In a good week for unusual canines, the country's first commercially available smart robot dog that ¡°understands¡± human speech was unveiled on Thursday.
Robotics maker Dasatech in Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province developed two robotic dogs for use as household pets and will exhibit the products in front of Bucheon City Hall on Friday. There have been robotic dogs for research purposes, but this is the first time such a robot that has the ability to understand human speech is being offered for sale.
The couple named 'Genibo' resemble bull terriers and are 30cm tall, 33.4 cm long and weigh 1.5 kg. The speech recognition feature enables the robots to understand and comply with 100 words including commands like, "come here," "sit," "wag your tail," and "do a headstand."
Petting the machine¡¯s head, back or flank, or giving it a ball will distort its features into a happy expression. The robot is capable of navigating its way around obstacles in its path. Dasatech¡¯s 40-member team has invested three years of research into completing the robot, which contains 17 small motors and a CPU, as well as Bluetooth features that allow it to receive wireless commands from a computer in its plastic body.
