The bitter rivalry between Korea¡¯s two biggest electronics corporations is moving into the courts after no. 2 LG Electronics on Friday said it is suing Samsung Electronics for slander.
LG says Samsung conducted a smear campaign over a flagship LG digital TV with built-in hard disk.
It alleges that Samsung adverts falsely suggest it had to install a noisy cooling fan for the hard disk in the PDP TV despite the fact there is ¡°no connection¡± between HDD and cooling fans. Samsung also gave the impression the TV has a built-in obsolescence of 20,000 hours while its real life span was ¡°at least 50,000 hours,¡± LG says.
Samsung stands accused of unfair comparative advertising without objective assessment of the facts, which LG says is tantamount to defamation. The company said the courts are its only recourse if it wants to stop Samsung¡¯s advertising campaign because of the potential losses it could suffer amid soaring demand for PDP TVs ahead of the 2006 World Cup.
