Korea Tops List of Big Spenders on Private Tutoring
The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development has released annual statistics comparing its 30-member group on a range of issues that Korea came out top in spending on private tutoring and the lowest fertility rate.

Korea spent the most on private tutoring among the 30-membered OECD according to the OECD Factbook 2006 released on Tuesday. For overall education, Korea was the third biggest spender as of 2002. But when it came to private tutoring expenditures against GDP, Korea topped the list at 2.9 percent, compared to the OECD average of 0.7.

Korea is near the bottom of the chart in its fertility rate. As of 2002, Korea was 29th with a birthrate of 1.17, much lower than the OECD average of 1.56 the following year.

On the upside, the world's 11th largest economy posted the lowest unemployment rate of 3.7 percent compared to the 6.9 percent average among members. At the same time, however, Koreans were found to have the longest working hours among OECD members. As of 2004, a Korean worked on average 2,400 hours a year.
