Samsung Aims to Lead 'Mobile Revolution'
Samsung Electronics claimed Tuesday it had ¡°all the semiconductor technology¡± for a ¡°mobile revolution.¡± The claim was made by Hwang Chang-gyu, the head of the firm¡¯s semiconductor business, at a mobile solutions event organized by Samsung in Taipei, Taiwan.

By ¡°mobile revolution¡± the firm means an era where IT devices are getting ¡°small, lightweight, and slim¡± based on new semiconductor technology such as Flash memory or a combination of Flash and D-RAM chips. Examples are Apple¡¯s iPod nano MP3 player equipped with flash memory chips, or slim mobile phones.

¡°The PC market led by Intel, the world¡¯s No. 1 semiconductor company, is stagnant,¡± Hwang said. ¡°But the mobile market with its exceptionally fast pace of growth will be led by Samsung Electronics.¡± Samsung is the world¡¯s no. 2 chipmaker.

Hwang also had praise for his host country, saying Taiwanese IT companies ¡°will be spearheading the mobile revolution.¡± He claimed Samsung semiconductor technology ¡°will spread to every corner of the world with the help of these Taiwanese companies.¡± Taiwan leads the world in the production of laptops with an 86 percent market share, LCD monitors with a 72 percent market share, and main boards with a 79 percent market share. The country is one of the largest IT markets and is expected to buy more than $2.5 billion (W2.5 trillion) worth of Samsung semiconductor this year alone.

Samsung Electronics has unveiled a Flash-based 32 GB solid state drive (SSD), a new high-capacity storage device. SSD is faster than hard disk drives and more cost-effective in terms of power consumption, Hwang said. ¡°SSD will take over 30 percent of the current laptop HDD market within the next two or three years,¡± he added.
