Government to Pay Elderly to Look out for Each Other
The government announced Monday its plans to create some 12,000 jobs within the year for senior citizens who are healthy enough to take care of other senior citizens that have mobility issues due to diseases or other maladies.

The Ministry of Planning and Budget (MPB) said it would inject a budget of W12.4 billion (W5.8 billion from national funds and W6.6 billion from local taxes) in order to increase the number of such jobs from 1,750 last year to as many as 12,000 this year.

The MPB said that it would be accepting applications from healthy senior citizens for the post, the duties of which include taking care of disabled senior citizens by bathing them, cleaning houses, being a companion for chit-chat, doing the laundry, making side dishes, and checking in-home safety, among other tasks, during regular visits.

Seniors who are 65 or older are eligible for the jobs. Successful candidates will work for seven months and get paid a monthly salary of W200,000.
