A public service officer working at Cheong Wa Dae has strangled his wife, a public information officer for the Uri Party, to death, Seoul Dongdaemun police said Friday. Police said the suspect confessed to the crime and will be indicted for murder once his motive has been established.
According to the police, the woman was found dead in a car parked in a neighborhood in Jeonnong-dong, Seoul on Friday morning. Police suspected murder because there were signs of strangulation around her neck.
The body was found by a traffic warden. Police quoted the man as saying he went to the car to tell the driver to move it because it was illegally parked. Since she did not respond and the car was locked from inside, he thought she was sleeping. ¡°But she did not move an inch for an hour, and I suspected that there must be something wrong so I reported to police,¡± the warden was quoted as saying.
On reviewing CCTV tapes of the apartment building where the woman lived, police found that she went out at around 1 a.m. with her husband, who returned home alone. This raised suspicions that he killed her.
The incident has shocked Cheong Wa Dae, which considering its seriousness reported it to President Roh Moo-hyun. It also delivered a blow to the ruling Uri Party, where the victim worked.
