Korea Railroad¡¯s unionized workers went on strike Wednesday, wreaking havoc with train timetables across the country. Negotiations over KORAIL's restructuring have failed and union members are now striking as they had threatened. The government is expected to take strong action against the move in line with a warning by the National Labor Relations Commission which on Tuesday said the government will invoke its emergency arbitration powers. This would end the strike and ban the union from resuming it for 15 days.

Rail workers in both cargo and passenger operations have chosen to go ahead with their protest regardless.

Meanwhile, the Seoul Metro union has abandoned plans to strike after it narrowed down differences with management over better working conditions and higher wages.

Separately, Korea's second-largest labor umbrella, the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions, has launched a general strike in protest against a controversial reform bill aimed at increasing flexibility in the labor market, which passed the committee stage on Tuesday.
