Sex Offenders to Be Tagged From Sept. 1
The ruling Uri Party on Wednesday announced Draconian plans to publish the names of pedophiles including first-time offenders and says it will back an opposition proposal for the U.K.-style electronic tagging of sex offenders.

Lee Eun-young, the chairwoman of the party¡¯s policy committee, told reporters the party will seek legislation that requires the names, addresses and pictures of repeat sex offenders to be listed so the public can access the information. In the case of sexual abuse of children and teenagers, that will apply even to first-time offenders, she added.

Repeat offenders could also be restricted in their movement and their front doors marked with a sign ¡°to enable neighbors to protect themselves,¡± she added.

Lee said the party would consider adopting a Grand National Party proposal to electronically tag sex offenders.

The party will discuss prevention of sex crimes in a meeting with the Justice Ministry, the National Youth Commission, the Gender Equality and Family Ministry and the police on Friday. Police on Tuesday published statistics showing that sexual abuse of minors is on the increase amid a reduction in the number of overall sex crimes.
