Olympic medalist Toby Dawson has canceled a planned visit to Korea after a publicity storm greeted a Busan manĄŻs claim that Dawson (29) is his long-lost son. The bronze medalist in the men's freestyle moguls competition at the Turin Olympics, who was born in Korea but raised in the U.S. by adoptive parents, will take a much-needed rest after the games, according to his agent. Jim Spinello released a statement Tuesday saying the athlete will visit Korea at a later date.
Dawson was to compete on behalf of the U.S. at the 2006 FIS Freestyle Ski World Cup starting March 1 at the Jisan Resort in Icheon, and reports said he would arrive on Feb. 26.
The statement said a Korean reporter had been calling nonstop to say he knows who DawsonĄŻs biological parents are but did not identify himself or say which media outlets he works for. He even called U.S. broadcasters NBC and ABC to say Dawson has found his biological parents. Spinello said Dawson wanted to look for his parents quietly after the games finish. He added Dawson was still proud of his Korean heritage.
Dawson has received more than 200 e-mails and a constant barrage of phone calls and is worn out, the statement said. But it said no-one had taken a DNA test that would prove their paternity.
