Advocaat Took Pay Cut to Coach Korea
Korea manager Dick Adocaat will have earned some US$720,000 by the end of the World Cup in July for coaching the national team. According to the Korean Football Association¡¯s budget for 2006, the salary is some $590,000, with an extra $30,000 for residence and income tax, an $89,000 accommodation allowance and $7,000 for food. Divided up over the seven months through July, Advocaat is pulling in about $127,000 per month.

This is the first time that the amount paid to the national team manager has been disclosed. Last year, when Advocaat took charge of the UAE team, he made about 165,000 euro ($190,000) a month or $2.2 million per year, but he said being in charge of team that qualified for the World Cup is more important than the money. His precursor Guus Hiddink, who led the team in the 2002 World Cup, earned around $1 million a year.

The highest-paid national manager is Sven-Goran Eriksson for England with 4.5 million pounds a year. Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho earns the highest annual salary of 6 million pounds. Domestically, the highest annual salary for a professional football team manager is $400,000. Among professional baseball team coaches, Kim Jae-bak of the Hyundai team is the top earner with $250,000 this year.
