Korean athletes took the gold and silver medals in short-track speed skating for both men and women at the Winter Olympics in Turin on Saturday. Ahn Hyun-soo struck gold for the second time during the games, this time in the men's 1,000 m competition. His teammate Lee Ho-suk won his second silver medal and American skater Apolo Anton Ohno took bronze. For Ahn, the gold medal was a chance to redeem himself from a fateful slip-up at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, where Ahn and Ohno were pitted against each other in the men's 1,000m. Ahn lost his bid after a crash sent him, Ohno and another skater tumbling.
Earlier, South Korean women set the pace in the 1,500 m sort-track finals. Defending world champion Jin Sun-yu took gold and teammate Choi Eun-kyung silver. Byun Chun-sa came third but was disqualified after judges said she pushed a Chinese opponent.
With Saturday's strong showing, South Korea now ranks fifth overall with three gold, three silver and a bronze. The top four medal winners are the U.S. with seven gold followed by Germany, Russia and Austria.
