Tearjerker Subway Wedding Was a Stunt
A video of the heartrending subway wedding of two orphans that captured Netizens¡¯ hearts on Valentine¡¯s Day in fact showed a performance staged by university students, it emerged Thursday.

Hoseo University in South Chungcheong Province said Thursday the play recorded by a passenger on his mobile phone was a kind of pilot project of seven members of the Theater and Film Department¡¯s drama club. It was recorded on Feb. 10 in a train passing a Line No. 5 subway station. Prof. Kim Dae-hyun, the club¡¯s advisor, apologized for the misunderstanding saying the performance was part of a departmental event and the students made a mistake in failing to tell passengers it was just a play. ¡°The seven students are in shock because they unwittingly caused so much controversy,¡± he added.

The passenger who recorded the performance posted the video clip on the Internet on Feb. 14. The young couple in the clip provoked many a sigh among Netizens by saying they are getting married on the train because they cannot afford a proper wedding. ¡°It feels like ages since I saw such a touching scene. It was more beautiful than a wedding ceremony that costs hundreds of millions of won,¡± an emphatic user commented in a message. But things got out of hand when a kind-hearted user of the Daum portal launched an appeal to send the couple on a honeymoon and more than 1,500 Netizens signed up to show their support for the couple until midnight.

Reactions to the rude awakening in cyberspace were mixed. ¡°I don¡¯t believe anything any more. The event has made me more suspicious of society,¡± one disillusioned user wrote, while another confessed to feeling ¡°bitter.¡± But yet another saw a silver lining. ¡°For just a few seconds, the ceremony made us feel warm and moved us again,¡± they wrote.
