North Korea¡¯s Vice Minister of Trade Kim Yong-jae has been named to the post of ambassador to Russia, a diplomatic source in Moscow said Monday.
Kim is not a career diplomat but an economic expert. The source said the appointment was seen as a signal that North Korean leader Kim Jong-il wants to pay more attention to business and trade.
Rumors of a large-scale shakeup in North Korean diplomacy have been circulating for a while and gained urgency after Kim¡¯s recent visit to China.
The outgoing ambassador to Russia, Park Ui-chun, has been in the job since April 1998.
