New U.S. Missile Strategy to Focus on N.Korea
The U.S. Department of Defense says it plans to build an integrated missile defense system in Northeast Asia aimed at blocking missile threats from countries like North Korea. At a press briefing in Washington, Pentagon policy official Ryan Henry said under the country's new defense readiness plan, a region-wide counter-missile system called the ˇ°triad strategyˇ± will be set up.

A ˇ°triadˇ± mission would mean integrating offensive and defensive military measures as well as infrastructure to reduce threats of so-called weapons of mass destruction plus ballistic and cruise missiles.

The strategy is part of Washington's long-term defense scheme, which was included in the latest Quadrennial Defense Review released on Friday. The 92-page document is significant for South Korea given its long military alliance with the U.S. The report classifies North Korea as one of the potentially hostile states that threaten the U.S. and its allies with weapons of mass destruction. It says Pyongyang has at least two nuclear warheads and is also accused of selling missiles and related technology to countries like Iran.
