Japan¡¯s ruling Liberal Democratic Party has proposed compensating leprosy patients from Korea and Taiwan who were forcibly segregated during the Japanese occupation with 8 million yen each, the Asahi Shimbun reported. The LDP will coordinate with opposition parties to submit a revision to the country¡¯s Hansen disease compensation law when the Diet reconvenes on Friday.
The sum falls short of the compensation Japanese patients are entitled to under the laws, which ranges from 8-14 million yen depending on the length of their internment.
The Tokyo District Court last October ruled in favor of Taiwanese leprosy patients and against Korean patients who claimed compensation under the current law.
