Korea Forms Task Force to Recover Ancient Books

Korea has set up a government-level task force to handle stalled talks with France to recover ancient Korean books were looted by French naval forces in 1866. The books called Oe Gyu Jang Gak or Korean Royal Court Library documents are now stored at the French National Library in Paris. Seoul made an official request to the French government in 1992 for the booksĄŻ return, and since 1999, civilian experts have engaged in talks on behalf of the two governments but have made little progress. The new six-member team is headed by Jang Jai-ryong, a senior researcher at the Institute of Foreign Affairs and National Security.
