Heavy Snows Cost Businesses Dear

Highways Succumb to Annual Snow Debacle
The Snow-Stricken Rural Southwest Is a Disaster Zone
Record snowfall that blanketed the country's southwestern provinces made no exception for businesses there. Samsung Electronics on Thursday suspended operation of its home appliance plant in Gwangju, South Jeolla Province and thus failed to produce a scheduled 40,000 refrigerators, kimchi fridges and vacuum cleaners.

Daewoo Electronics also suspended operations at its Gwangju plant for a day on Wednesday night. ˇ°We resumed operation because we were getting behind in producing refrigerators for export, but we are worried about how to transport them because of disrupted highway traffic," the company said.

Snow also hampered operation of GM Daewoo Motor's plant in Gunsan, which fell 500 Lacettis and Rezzos behind schedule due to a halt from Wednesday night to Thursday morning. Kia Motors was able to operate its Gwangju plant normally but is having trouble transporting cars to Mokpo Port, with some 150 cars waiting to be shipped.
