Two Korean plasma display panel manufacturers are among five that have joined hands to promote the flat screen digital TVs in the U.S. The Plasma Display Coalition is comprised of U.S. subsidiaries of Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, Hitachi Home Electronics, Panasonic and Pioneer Electronics, who plan to launch a joint promotion every year. It will also coordinate efforts to improve the quality of PDP TVs.
Since the coalition decided to open its doors to all PDP TV manufacturers, membership is expected to swell. The five firms have injected about W10 trillion (US$10 billion) in research and development, facilities, design and marketing of plasma TVs since the 1990s and are the leading players in the 40-inch or bigger digital TV market.
"The aim of the coalition is to promote the growth of plasma TVs in the U.S., respond to consumer and retailer requests for more accurate information on PDP TVs, and correct myths about their affordability and features," said Jim Palumbo, the coalition¡¯s president. Industry sources say the U.S. PDP TV market accounts for about 30 percent of the world¡¯s and is expected to grow exponentially from 1.6 million units this year to 3.4 million in 2007 and 4 million in 2008.
