Iraqi police say gunmen have raided a hospital in the northern city of Kirkuk and freed a wounded man, who was detained for plotting to kill a judge involved in the trial of Saddam Hussein.
A senior police official said three police guards were killed and six others were wounded in the attack that took place early Wednesday morning.
Separately, one U.S. soldier was killed in a when his vehicle hit a mine near the western town of Habbaniya Tuesday.
Also on Tuesday, Al-Qaida in Iraq claimed responsibility for double suicide bombings at a Baghdad police academy that killed 36 people and wounded more than 70 others - mostly police officers and recruits
