The Uri Party says it will expedite legislation to facilitate the work of the Seoul Stem Cell Hub run by pioneering geneticist Prof. Hwang Woo-suk. The bill would separate the research center from Seoul National University Hospital, making it a special corporation and providing it with a W11.5 billion (US$11.5 million) budget for next year.
The party¡¯s chief policymaker Won Hye-young said while there were concerns about the recent announcement that Hwang¡¯s long-time collaborator Gerald Schatten pulled out of the project over ethical concerns, ¡°we think this must not be allowed to lower morale and quality of research.¡± He said the government would therefore pass the legislation quickly so the team can concentrate on their work.
