Bomb disposal squads started patrolling every 30 minutes and armored vehicles and biochemical patrols were deployed on Friday when Incheon International Airport went on orange alert ahead of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in Busan.
Incheon has been identified as the most likely target of any terrorist attack other than the conference venues.
The security level will be raised to red or ¡°serious¡± on Tuesday, when APEC heads of state start arriving for the summit at the culmination of the forum.
There are four alert levels, from blue to red. It was the first time in its four-year history that the airport has gone on orange alert.
With the move, 20 percent of passengers will have their carry-on luggage screened when they arrive at the airport. All air cargo from terror-stricken regions will be checked three times a day, and passengers from about 20 countries will undergo more stringent background checks.
