Parents joined other civic organizations on Tuesday in blasting the powerful teacher unions for plans to sabotage new teacher evaluations. The Korea Teachers and Educational WorkersĄŻ Union (KTU) and the Korea Federation of TeachersĄŻ Associations plan to go on strike Saturday and stage a mass protest against evaluations that would introduce a modicum of parental say in the way children are taught.
The Ministry of Education says it will take legal action against the KTU leadership if the strike goes ahead and discipline teachers who take part in the demonstration without permission from their principal.

The coalition of parents and civic groups told a press conference Tuesday that teachers should accept the evaluation plans, whereby principals and educators as well as parents would take part in assessing teachers, with an open mind and try to make the new system work.
The group denounced the KTU, which it said rejected the plan without proper cause although representatives from the government, parents groups and teacher organizations had agreed to a compromise scheme. In doing so, the KTU ignored the will of the participants and revealed the undemocratic and self-serving way it operates, the coalition said.
