The recently opened World Stem Cell Hub in Seoul is seeking test subjects suffering from Parkinson¡¯s disease and spinal chord paralysis. Sufferers who want to take part in research can apply from 9 a.m. on Nov. 1.
The center, which is housed in Seoul National University Hospital and headed by cloning pioneer Hwang Woo-suk, said Monday applicants can download forms at the center¡¯s homepage (www.worldstemcellhub.org) or from the hospital (www.snuh.org) and submit them via e-mail or by post.
The hub will pre-select candidates for closer examination based on the applications. The chosen test subjects will undergo simple surgery to extract skin tissue for somatic cell donations.
¡°The registration of patients is only the initial stage of the research to select optimal test subjects,¡± said Prof. Ahn Cu-rie, who is in charge of clinical tests at the center. ¡°Clinical tests or treatment can¡¯t begin with patient registration and somatic cell donations. Nor are subjects chosen on a first-come-first-serve basis.¡±
The hub has been inundated with some 300 inquiries by phone and 30 e-mails a day from domestic and overseas patients since it opened on Nov. 19.
