Integrated Army Information System Ready Soon
The Army's new integrated real-time information gathering system will be ready by December. The ¡°C4I¡± system for ground forces is tipped to boost their effectiveness by integrating command, control, communications, computers and intelligence, collecting information in real-time and analyzing and synthesizing it for use in operational command.

"The C41 system, which has been in development since the late 1990s, will be completed and put into full-scale operation at the beginning of December,¡± Lt-Gen. Lee Sung-chul of the Army¡¯s Fifth Corps said Sunday.

"The commanders of units above battalion level can access all information about friendly forces and enemy forces on the battleground with just one laptop,¡± an official with the corps said. Information about the enemy is collected by spy drones monitoring from above, low-altitude surveillance radar and target detection radar, and special attack forces or surveillance teams that move in behind the enemy and provide information from the rear.

Images, pictures and communication details are then transmitted to a central computer at corps headquarters, where it appears on the big screen. It covers enemy military forces and weaponry as well as logistics of friendly forces at a glance, allowing commanders to respond more effectively. Experts see the establishment of the C4I system as an opportunity to move into the vanguard of digital-assisted 21st century warfare.

The Army has invested W255.4 billion (US$255 million) in establishing the system since 1999. It plans to complete the establishment in the Fifth Corps this year, in the Sixth Corps next year, and in all others in the front line by 2008.
