The U.S. Forces Korea on Wednesday closed Camp Sears in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi Province under an agreement that will see its bases shrink from 41 to 23.
According to the Land Partnership Plan (LPP), the USFK will return to South Korea roughly 50 percent of the land it currently uses, equivalent to some 135 million sq.m, by 2011. Camp Sears has until now housed Second Infantry Division air defense artillery battalions. Until it is officially returned in 2006, it will be looked after by a private security firm.
Uijeongbu City wants to create an administrative village at the site housing its court, prosecutor's office and police station. Three more bases in the vicinity of Uijeongbu will be closing their doors before the year is out -- Kyle, Falling Water and Essayons -- following last May's closure of Camp LaGuardia.
