Poll Suggests Deficit in Sex Education
As many as half of Korea¡¯s female college students are sexually experienced, a poll suggests, and a significant proportion had abortions because they failed to use contraceptives. In an online poll by Grand National Party lawmaker Ahn Myeong-ok of the Health and Welfare Committee of 318 female college students across the country, 48.4 percent of respondents said they had experienced a sexual relationship. Of those, 47.4 percent said that they always used contraception and 24 percent said they had terminated a pregnancy. Some 60 percent of those who used contraception said their partners wore condoms.

Some 34.3 percent said that they were currently involved in a sexual relationship, and the average number of sexual encounters per month was 4.3. To the question, "Do you think that you must marry your sexual partner?" 34.4 percent said yes. When asked where they had learned about sex, 30.8 percent said the Internet and 26.7 percent from their friends. While 63.5 percent of respondents said they had experienced concern about something in their sex life at some point, only 21.1 percent said they consulted a gynecologist or other professional.
