LG Chem has developed a long-life methanol-based fuel cell battery, the company said Wednesday. The battery, which will be ready for mass release by the end of the year, weighs less than 1 kg. Switching fuel cartridges makes it possible to use portable electronic devices for long periods without additional power supply. Notebook computers, for example, can run up to 10 hours with a single 200 cc fuel battery. The LG Chem product has about 25W of power, enough to operate devices that need instant high power such as DMB receivers, mobile phones and portable multimedia players. Users can also recharge their cell phones with the battery.
The battery has a lifespan of more than 4,000 hours, the company said, eight times longer than competing Japanese and U.S. products. As more laptops and mobile phones use energy-intensive multimedia features, LG Chem is planning to expand its product lineup with 50W models as well. The battery will cost some W500,000 (about US $500).
