China and South Korea plan to install a hotline to facilitate communication between their naval forces. The hotline is expected to be useful in incidents ranging from crack-downs on Chinese fishing boats that cross into South Korean waters to aiding coordination in rescues at sea.
According to a report issued Tuesday at Armed Forces headquarters during a National Assembly audit, a direct line of communication with the Chinese Navy ˇ°for the purpose of mutual information exchange" is to be set up in December.
The agreement will be finalized after working level defense talks between the two countries, with the hotline likely to link the two fleet headquarters.
In Korea, it would be installed at the Navy's 2nd fleet headquarters in Pyongtaek, Gyeonggi Province. The South Korean Navy already has hotlines with Japan, Russia, Indonesia and Malaysia.
