Samsung Electronics appears to have developed the world¡¯s largest next generation memory, a 256 Mb Phase-change RAM (P RAM). Business insiders say Samsung recently started production of a test model after managing to reduce the input current from 1mA or 2mA to 0.4mA, which made the process possible. The largest P RAM so far is 64 Mb.
P RAM is a next-generation memory alongside F RAM and M RAM, combining flash memory¡¯s ability to store information even after the power is shut off and the speed of D RAM.
The new product is reportedly able store as much as the NOR Flash memory widely used in mobile phones and is therefore expected to replace NOR Flash as soon as mass-production starts in a year or more.
An industry insider said the P RAM model¡¯s capacity was big enough for use in mobile gadgets, and this would bring a revolution in the business. ¡°P RAM has overcome the slow speed of NAND flash and the size limit of NOR flash and will spread fast once mass-production starts.¡±
