Police in Goyang on Tuesday booked a 22-year-old man for stealing imported purebred dogs from the dog training service where he worked and selling them at knockdown prices. After getting a traineeship with the dog trainers in Goyang's Deogyang-gu on Aug. 19, the man identified as Choi is suspected of having sold 10 imported dogs with a market value of some W100 million (about US$100,000) for about W2 million.
Police said he placed an advertisement on the Internet saying he was selling the dogs cheaply because he urgently needed money. After finding two accomplices including a dog trader identified as Na, he stole the dogs while the owner of the training center was out of town, police said.
Choi sold five Great Danes as well as a Giant Schnauzer, an Alaskan Malamute, an Akita, a Borzoi and a Miniature Schnauzer, dogs that would cost several million won each ¡°by weight, just like dogs raised for meat," police said. Police were able to retrieve the animals, which had been sold to Seosan and Hongseong, South Chungcheong Province and Ansan, Gyeonggi Province. They were returned to the training center.
