Southern and Eastern Regions on Lookout for Typhoon Nabi

Typhoon Nabi's Peak Expected Later Tuesday
Typhoon Nabi, the 14th typhoon of the year, will approach the Korean Peninsula on Tuesday or Wednesday. Accompanied by strong rains and wind, Nabi is expected to visit upon the Gyeongsang provinces and coastal Gangwon province 20-meter-a-second winds and more than 100mm of rain, demanding special care be taken to prevent losses to agricultural products and facilities.

With the approach of the storm, the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) handed down on Monday a typhoon warning for the waters south of Jeju Island, and typhoon advisories for Busan, Ulsan and coastal areas of South Jeolla Province and the two Gyeongsang provinces. It appears the advisory will be enlarged by Tuesday morning to cover the entire country, with the exception of Seoul/Gyeonggi Province and the Chungcheong provinces.

The KMA said, "It appears Nabi, which is currently heading north at about 15km an hour from the waters off Okinawa, will rapidly lose strength after passing over Kyushu, Japan on Tuesday morning, and exit toward the East Sea on Wednesday or Thursday." It forecasted that thanks to the influence of the storm, coastal regions of Gangwon province and the Gyeongsang provinces could expect to see 30~60mm of rain, with more than 100mm in places. Seoul and Gyeonggi Province, far removed from Nabi's influence, would see between 5~20mm, while the Chungcheong provinces and inner Gangwon province would see 10~40mm.

The KMA said, "Even if the typhoon doesn't make landfall, with the radius of strong winds reaching 700km, the storm is extremely powerful and there was concern of damage in the eastern and southern coastal regions."
