Citing anonymous officials, AP reported Wednesday that US$4.4 million in counterfeit bills confiscated during a bust of a smuggling ring in the United States appears to have been produced in North Korea.
The smuggling ring, which was rounded up after being tracked for several years by the FBI and other U.S. law enforcement agencies, is suspected of bringing counterfeit money and products including drugs, cigarettes, stamps, jeans and Viagra into the U.S.
The Justice Department and Department of Homeland Security said Monday they arrested 87 people in a large-scale investigation in 11 cities in the U.S. and Canada. The Justice Department did not give more details saying only the arrested were Asians and Americans. It made no mention of a North Korea-connection.
AP quoted two anonymous government sources as saying it appeared the counterfeit US$100 bills confiscated in the bust were produced in North Korea but did not circulate within the U.S.
