A former officer in the North Korean Army who disappeared from China's Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture in early March is reportedly now incarcerated in a State Security jail in Pyongyang.
Kang Kon, 36, settled in South Korea after defecting from the North in June 2000 but went back and forth between the country and China and maintained close ties with some in North Korea. He made headlines in February last year when he released a video taken at Yodok political prison camp, which he had obtained from a North Korean contact.
A Chinese source familiar with North Korea said Monday Kang climbed to the top of the State Security Department's kidnap list after he released the tape. ¡°Using Kang's helpers in North Korea, the State Security Department called Kang to Lungjing (a town in Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture) and kidnapped him," the source said. Another Chinese-Korean from Helong who worked with Kang has gone into hiding from State Security agents.
A government official said, "We've been investigating for a while where Kang went¡± but were unable to confirm he was abducted.
