¡°Baby baby baby...¡± In time with Eve's "Got What You Need," a young woman gets on stage and takes off her t-shirt. Another woman, wearing a skirt but no underwear, gets on top of a Russian man next to her and simulates sex. A third, stripping off her red bra, takes a turn around the stage. A fourth in a miniskirt is greeted with thunderous cheers each time her bottom shows. But since none of the women will dance naked, they are bumped out of the rankings.

At another such contest at an Itaewon nightclub, a man dances in nothing but a G-string. This nightclub holds contests every Thursday and Sunday night and hands out cash prizes too.

That was the scene at 3:30 a.m. Monday at a nightclub in Shinsa-dong, Gangnam. The moment the "booby-booby dance" -- a sorry affair where men and women dance glued together -- started to die down, it was time for the "Sexy Dance Contest", held every Monday with a W500,000 (US$500) prize to the patron who dances the best in the buff. Runners-up get bottles of Royal Salute and Ballantine¡¯s 12-year-old whisky.

"On Sexy Dance Monday, you need to come early to get a table, because it¡¯s hard to get a spot otherwise,¡± says a waiter. And although it was the start of the week, the 700-pyeong (2,310 s.q. meters) nightclub was indeed packed to the rafters. The DJ says you win a prize only if you get buck-naked. ¡°It doesn't matter how well you dance." Last week, first place went to a woman who did a handstand, he says. Perhaps rendered nervous by the uproar over indie band Couch's on-air display of their manhood, he warns: "Shut off your cell phones. If you get caught secretly taping the competition, you die. This isn't MBC."
MBC, indeed, it is not. At another nightclub in Itaewon, Yongsan-gu at 3:30 a.m. one Friday, the atmosphere heats up to fever pitch after an event where W3 million (US$3,000) is sprinkled around. The nightclub holds its own "Sexy Dance Contest," in which winners take W1 million, and second place gets W500,000 and third place gets W300,000. Five men's teams and seven women's teams compete. To stop people secretly filming the event, plainclothes bouncers are on the prowl. Participants get to choose their own music. Remarkably, a participant from the contest at the Gangnam nightclub -- a woman who goes by the moniker "Fat Girl" -- makes an appearance here as well. "There are a lot of prize hunters,¡± a waiter shrugs.
