Maritime police in Jeju Island said Monday they seized five Chinese fishing boats for illegally fishing in Korea's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

Maritime police said the fishermen are charged with operating without permit or violating fishing ban periods in waters about 170 km west of Biyang Island on Sunday night, some 11-13 km inside Korea's EEZ.

The waters the boats were seized in were incorporated into Korea's EEZ only on July 1 under a fisheries accord with China. Jeju maritime police will take legal action once the boats are brought into Jeju Harbor and an investigation completed. Jeju authorities have seized 69 Chinese fishing boats so far this year.
