North Korean civilian vessels will be able to pass through the Jeju Strait from Aug. 15 if they get permission in advance.
The two Koreas agreed this during working-level talks on maritime cooperation on Wednesday in Munsan, Gyeonggi Province. The move will cut 53 nautical miles and some four-and-a-half hours off travel for North Korean ships, which have so far had to take shipping lanes south of Jeju Island.
The two sides also agreed to set up a communication net through the truce village of Panmunjeom, Gyeonggi Province on Thursday to help ships to pass safely. It will go into operation on Friday.
