North Korea Wants Peace Treaty with the U.S.
North Korea has proposed a peace treaty with the United States to replace the armistice agreement that ended the Korean war five decades ago. The announcement was made by the North's Foreign Ministry through the country's official Korea Central News Agency.

A ministry spokesman said that a peace pact would help end the U.S. hostile policy toward the North which had spawned the nuclear issue. The peace pact, the spokesman said, would automatically denuclearize the Korean peninsula.

Experts say it is unclear how the proposal will affect the 6-party nuclear talks which will resume on Tuesday after a 13-month hiatus.
