U.S.-N.Korea to Meet Ahead of 6-Party Negotiations
Seeking to avoid another failure at the dialogue table, the U.S. government is set to meet with North Korean officials in advance in a bid to fine-tune details ahead of the multilateral meeting.

The United States is determined to resolve North Korea's nuclear ambitions once and for all during the fourth round of six-party nuclear talks. Washington is sending a clear message that it's decision time for North Korea.

The preparatory talks between the United States and North Korea have been the focus of intense media attention, ahead of the actual multilateral negotiations slated for later this month.

A sense of urgency surrounds the nuclear standoff with North Korea. Thirteen months have passed since Pyongyang boycotted the six-party nuclear talks, citing what it calls a hostile policy by Washington. And during that period, experts fear North Korea has made deadly progress in becoming a nuclear-weapons state.

On Sunday, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing stressed the need to reach some kind of a breakthrough this time if the participating countries really wish to establish peace in the region.

Even before the talks have taken place, some are already doubting the results, saying the failure of this round will lead to measures that are far tougher than dialogue.
