In a blow to director Park Chan-wook¡¯s long-awaited ¡°Sympathy for Lady Vengeance,¡± the movie has been given an R rating, for restricted to those over 18.

Promoter AllThatCinema said Thursday the Korea Media Rating Board told the company the movie was rated R although it initially applied for a 15 rating.

The board reportedly cited violence, use of guns and the grueling depiction of the heroine Geumja¡¯s life in prison, where she is sent to on a charge of infanticide. Park has said the last installment of his revenge trilogy was aimed at those over 15. The promoters said the board¡¯s decision was regrettable but they would not appeal.
