Watch Out for Your Appliances in the Rain
As the rains lash Korea it is important to remember that water is fatal to electronic devices, while the danger of being struck by lightning in a storm should not be underestimated, experts warn.

¡ß Save your PC data often

PCs should be used with care since they are usually connected to an external network cable. Lightning, which contains over 10,000 volt high-tension currents, can cause serious damage to the monitor or HDD. Kim Ki-jung, director of a product liability department, says, ¡°When there is lightning, you should avoid using your computer and disconnect the power cable if possible.¡± If you must use the PC, save your data as often as possible, because a wet power cable or a wet network cable can result in power failure or network disconnection. HDDs that are damaged by lightning can be repaired, but cost depends on the damage and is usually hundreds of thousand won.

¡ß Cell-phones damaged by water should be taken to a service center as quickly as possible

When your mobile phone gets wet, you must separate the battery and take it to a service center as quickly as possible. Operating a wet handset will disable the inner circuit. Cell phones have indicators that tell you if they got wet. Companies will fix water-damaged phones, but they will charge for it. Samsung Electronics technician Park Yong-gu warns, ¡°If you come to the center an hour or more after getting the handset wet, in 90 percent of cases it can¡¯t be repaired.¡± He adds it is crucial to take in the phone as soon as possible and get the water to evaporate with alcohol.¡±

¡ß Disconnect the power cord when leaving the house

It is better to disconnect your electronic devices when leaving the house for longer periods in the rainy season. A possible flood can cause an electric leak, while humidity in the home is also a major cause of electrical accidents. Use dehydrators in the back of the television or the audio system, and open the cover of the washing machine often. An LG Electronics technician says even devices that aren¡¯t used often should be turned on once every three or four days to dry out from their own heat.
