Cloning Star Calls Research Success a Blessing for Korea
Seoul National University scientist Hwang Woo-suk has said his team¡¯s success in stem cell research is Heaven¡¯s way of making up to Korea for the sufferings of history. "I think the fact that barriers to research have been dissolved in a short period of time is Heaven¡¯s way of giving our nation, which has always been victimized by foreign invasions and ethnic struggle, a chance to hold our head up high."

Hwang made the remarks at a debate organized by the Kwanhun Club at the Korea Press Center in Seoul on Tuesday. "If we compare the road to putting stem cell therapy to practical use to a marathon course, research results up to now would correspond to the 22km turning point,¡± he said. The Kwanhun Club, which counts some of the country's most senior journalists among its members, was established in 1957 and is the oldest media organization in Korea.

"A 20-man medical advisory team gathered at Seoul National University Hospital and held deep discussions on international joint research since yesterday morning,¡± the scientist said. ¡°A world stem cell bank is expected to be established in Korea in October."

Hwang attempted to reach out to religious opposition to cloning, saying research ¡°mustn't become like a car without breaks or a chaotic street without traffic lights.¡± ¡°I'm inclined to include religious and civic group figures in my research team to ensure the transparency of research,¡± he added.

The discussion was covered by about 50 reporters, including 25 from abroad - proof of the intense interest Hwang¡¯s successive breakthroughs in stem cell research for therapeutic use have generated worldwide.
