The Joint Chiefs of Staff said Tuesday they will beef up security at Korea¡¯s Zaytun Division base in Irbil, northern Iraq, after a rocket attack on the compound by suspected insurgents. JCS spokesman Won Tae-jae said the division's threat level would remain set at ¡°red¡±, indicating danger, and it decided to restrict off-base activity with the exception of operations needed to strengthen base defenses, and to build more guard posts.
The JCS will erect five more guard posts in areas where insurgents could operate as well as strengthen patrols. Another 20 guard posts will be set up along Road No. 2 to Mosul after the insurgents that launched Monday's rocket attack fled to the city.
Meanwhile, an investigation of Monday's blast sites by Korean and U.S. military authorities revealed that the attackers fired four 3-8 km-range 107 mm rockets, three of which exploded on impact. The JCS said they presume the attackers fired their missiles from the road or a vehicle located about 4-5 km south of the base at around 4:00 a.m. using makeshift launchers.
