A New York Times editorial on Sunday urged the Bush Administration to support stem cell research after a breakthrough in the field by Korean scientist Hwang Woo-suk made headlines around the world. U.S. President George W. Bush had announced on Friday that he would veto a bill pending in the House of the Representatives that would give federal money to research on embryonic stem cell lines developed after August 2001 in the United States.

The editorial titled, ¡°A Surprising Leap on Cloning,¡± said that while U.S. scientists neglected research on stem cell due to political and religious protests, South Korean scientists stunned the world by producing the world¡¯s ¡°first human embryos that were genetic matches for diseased or injured patients.¡±

The editorial said the South Korean advances showed that the Congress debate over whether to give federal money to stem cell research was already well behind the times. ¡°The president threatened to veto even the modest proposals to use more surplus embryos from fertility clinics,¡± the editorial said. ¡°While scientists in Asia and Britain forge ahead,¡± the paper said, it was destructive to tie the hands of American scientists.
