The journal Science will punish two Korean newspapers for violating a press embargo on a stem cell research breakthrough by Korean scientist Hwang Woo-suk it was publishing. Science has reportedly decided on several punitive measures for the two papers.

The Hankyoreh Shinmun and JoongAng Ilbo ran articles on Hwang¡¯s thesis on their Korean and English websites before the Science embargo expired at 3:00 a.m. Friday but deleted them after protests by Hwang¡¯s team and the journal.

Hwang said the Science press manager told him in an e-mail the journal understood he was not responsible for the embargo violation and there was no reason for him to worry. But Science said it would decide on sanctions for the two newspapers such as stripping them of access to information distributed by the journal.
