U.S. President George W. Bush said he was "very concerned" about cloning and would veto any bill that supports embryonic stem cell research. "I made it very clear to Congress that the use of federal money, taxpayers' money, to promote a science which destroys life in order to save life -- I'm against that. Therefore, if the bill does that, I will veto it."
This remark comes after Professor Hwang Woo-suk of Seoul National University announced his team's success in creating stem cells that genetically match those of patients with incurable diseases.
Speaking to reporters at the White House on Friday, Mr. Bush condemned cloning research in Korea in an attempt to halt a bill that would lift the president's ban on using federal dollars to do research on embryonic stem cell lines created after August 2001.
Some Republicans criticized Mr. Bush's comments, saying the research promises cures for deadly diseases. Scientists also praised the latest techniques, but said it would take some time before clinical trials could be conducted and a therapy realized.
