NIS Report on Spymaster's Disappearance Full of Holes
A declassified U.S. State Department document contradicts a story that former KCIA Director Kim Hyung-wook was lured to Paris and murdered under circumstances straight out of a spy thriller, breathing new life into a mystery that refuses to go away. The document also indicates Kim disappeared into thin air on October 9, 1979, two days later than had been thought.

The New York edition of the Hankuk Ilbo reported that a "Weekly Status Report-Korea" sent by the State Department to the U.S. Embassy in Korea on Feb. 29, 1980 said it was certain Kim left Paris on October 9 with another Korean man and went to Dhahran in Saudi Arabia via Zurich, Switzerland. And there the trail ends.

The report said the Japanese Embassy in Washington D.C. gave the State Department the results of Tokyo¡¯s persistent inquiries with Paris police concerning Kim's disappearance. It added French police had no choice but to close their investigations after it was confirmed that Kim left for Saudi Arabia,.
