Large but attractively slim liquid crystal display (LCD) TVs are set to become available to a wider range of customers as electronics companies plan sweeping price cuts.
Erae Electronics said Thursday it will offer 40-inch LCD TVs for W3.49 million (US$3,490) this month. The high definition (HD) products come with set-top boxes and have panels made by S-LCD, a joint venture between Samsung Electronics and Sony. The company is taking advance orders through electronics retailers like Hi Mart and Electro Land on the understanding that it delivers them by the end of this month.
After cutting the price of 32-inch LCD TVs from W2.19 million to 1.99 million last month, Erae is the first electronics maker to slash 40-inch LCD TV prices to the W3 million range.
Earlier, fellow mid-sized electronic company Diboss reduced their 40-inch LCD products to around 4.5 million, and large companies like Samsung and LG also cut prices from W8-9 million to some W5.5 million.
Daewoo Securities researcher Kang Yoon-heum predicted 40-inch LCD TVs produced by big companies would end up costing W3-3.5 million around the end of the year and drop to some W2 million next year, depending on demand and company strategies.
